卖家的描述
Storage container(“eburi” 家族) – Turkana – Kenya – 木材与皮革 – 20世纪中期或更早
Origin: Turkana people
Country: Kenya
Materials: Wood and leather
Dimensions: 12 x 14 x 25 cm
Period: Mid-20th century or earlier
Provenance: Collected in situ by the present owner
A fine Turkana container belonging to the wider eburi family, used for the storage of fat.
This example is especially remarkable for the richness of its surface, the strength of its construction, and the sculptural presence of its imposing leather stopper.
The wooden body retains a striking ochre decoration, recalling the warm red-toned finishes also found on certain Turkana akarum vessels. This vivid surface treatment gives the piece an unusual visual presence and sets it apart from more restrained examples.
The imposing leather stopper is an object in its own right. Its height, volume, and fitted construction give the ensemble much of its character, while also emphasizing the practical importance of secure closure for stored contents. The braided leather carrying element further reinforces the functional intelligence of the piece.
Beyond its visual appeal, the container bears clear signs of long use. Indigenous repairs testifie to its lived history, and the surface shows the honest wear of an object that remained useful over time. The result is both ethnographically meaningful and formally compelling: a humble storage vessel elevated by material, function, and patina.
A very attractive and relatively uncommon Turkana example, appreciated for its ochre decoration, its sculptural stopper, and its strong field character.
Condition
Indigenous repairs.
Cracks and xylophage holes have been stabilized.
Wear, abrasions, and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
Good overall condition. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The container only.
No stand included.
