Fang-style reliquary figure – Gabon – Wood – H 62 cm with stand
Details
Origin: Fang style
Country: Gabon
Material: Wood
Height: 61 cm
Height with stand: 62 cm
Period: 20th century
Provenance: Ex private French collection
Description
A finely carved reliquary figure in the Fang style, standing in a composed frontal posture with bent legs, elongated torso, rounded breasts, and a large oval head with brass-inset eyes.
This example is especially appealing for its academic balance and strong visual presence. The sculpture follows the classic formal vocabulary associated with Fang reliquary figures: a calm frontal attitude, simplified volumes, and a powerful contrast between the broad head and the compact body. The dark surface, softened by age and handling, gives the figure an attractive depth and reinforces its sculptural quality.
Well mounted on an elegant custom bronze stand, the piece displays beautifully and reads as both an ethnographic-inspired object and a striking decorative sculpture.
A visually compelling late work in the Fang tradition, combining formal clarity, decorative strength, and excellent display quality.
Condition
Wear, abrasions, and surface irregularities consistent with age and handling. Stabilized crack to the back and another to the rear of the head. Minor losses and age-related marks. Good overall presentation. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The figure and its custom display stand.
