Item Description
Takaoka Douki Bronze Vase — Deep Green Marbled Finish, Tsurukubi (Crane-Neck) Form, with Wooden Box
This elegant bronze vase from Takaoka, Japan's foremost center of traditional copperware craft, captures the eye with its deep forest green surface marked by swirling grey-green marble patterning. The interplay of color — dark emerald meeting cool charcoal grey — creates a surface that shifts with the light, as though the metal itself breathes.
The silhouette is a classic tsurukubi (crane-neck) form: a full, rounded body rising into a long, slender neck that opens at the mouth with quiet restraint. This proportion, refined over centuries, brings stillness to any space — ideal alongside a single cut stem or placed alone as a sculptural object.
Takaoka copperware (高岡銅器) has been produced in Toyama Prefecture since the early Edo period, now accounting for over 90% of Japan's total cast bronze output. The craft combines lost-wax and sand casting with hand-patination techniques passed down through generations, producing objects prized for their durability, tactile weight, and depth of surface color. This vase exemplifies the tradition at its most refined.
