This vase is a work by Zuiho, a Takaoka metalwork artist. Cast in bronze using traditional techniques mastered in Takaoka — Japan's foremost center for copper and metal casting — the piece showcases a luminous emerald green surface achieved through deliberate chemical patination. The deep, jewel-like coloration shifts subtly across the contoured body, creating a quiet, ever-changing beauty that draws the eye from every angle. 金属工芸 A metalwork artist from Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture — Japan's foremost city for copper casting, with over 400 years of craft heritage. Zuiho has produced a wide-ranging body of work rooted in traditional Takaoka techniques while bringing a distinctive personal sensibility to each piece. Employing casting methods including lost-wax, shell mold, and die casting, as well as iron and aluminum casting, the artist works across both traditional and contemporary forms.
Awards include the Director General's Prize at the 18th Takaoka Products Creative Promotion Exhibition (1974), the Order of the Blue Ribbon Medal (1980, received eleven times), the Grand Prize at the 7th Takaoka Traditional Industries General Exhibition (1981), an Encouragement Award at the Kogei-Toshi Takaoka 86 Craft National Exhibition (1986), the Design Prize at the 26th Toyama Prefecture Design Exhibition (1986), and the Design Grand Prize at the 31st Toyama Prefecture Design Exhibition (1991). The artist has also completed numerous public bronze monument commissions installed across Japan.
