Antiqued Ebony and Silk Folding Fan with Woven & Hand-Painted Hunting Scene – Late 19th Century
Elegant antique folding fan dating from the late 19th century, crafted with finely carved ebony guards and sticks featuring delicate openwork floral decoration.
The fan leaf is made of black silk and decorated with an elaborate equestrian hunting scene combining woven textile imagery with hand-painted details. The central composition depicts a rider in a traditional red hunting coat pursuing game through a countryside landscape, framed by flowering foliage and trees. The reverse is finished in plain black silk. The fan retains its decorative tassel.
The combination of carved ebony, silk and detailed hunting imagery makes this an attractive collectible for enthusiasts of equestrian and fox-hunting memorabilia as well as antique decorative arts. The quality of the materials and craftsmanship reflects the popularity of such fans as fashionable accessories and decorative objects during the Victorian period.
The fan opens and closes correctly and remains an impressive display piece. The silk leaf displays signs of age, including areas of wear, small losses, splits and fraying along several folds and edges, which contribute to its authentic antique character. One ebony stick is damaged, while the remaining carved frame remains stable and retains its decorative appeal. The painted and woven decoration remains clearly visible and continues to present attractively despite age-related wear.
