Takaoka Copperware Flower Vase with Marbled Surface, Gold Inlay and Chrysanthemum Crest

This vase carries the legacy of Takaoka Copperware, a craft tradition founded in 1609 when Lord Maeda Toshinaga of the Kaga Domain invited master casters to the region. Today, Takaoka accounts for approximately 90% of Japan's cast bronze production and was designated a National Traditional Craft in 1975 — a testament to over 400 years of accumulated skill and aesthetic refinement.

The surface is finished in a sophisticated marbling technique that layers deep vermilion and gold into a fluid, organic pattern. The effect shifts dramatically with the light: under direct illumination the surface glows with warmth and gold; in shadow, it deepens into a rich, subdued red. No two pieces bear the same pattern — this finish is achieved entirely by hand, through the mastery of Takaoka's traditional coloring methods.
At the center of the body, a chrysanthemum crest rendered in gilt relief commands quiet authority. In Japan, the chrysanthemum is the symbol of the Imperial House and one of the most prestigious motifs in decorative art, carrying associations of longevity, nobility, and eternal beauty. Its presence here is not merely ornamental — it elevates the piece to a register of classical Japanese refinement.

The pear-shaped form follows the canon of Japanese flower vessels: a slender neck opening to a gently swelling body, resolving into a stable foot. This silhouette embodies the spirit of ikebana — the Japanese art of flower arrangement — in which the vessel itself is considered an equal partner to the flowers it holds.
