Elegant Antique Japanese Shitan (Rosewood) Kuro-kaki Style Display Shelf - Traditional Tea Ceremony Cha-tana with Fude-gaeshi Ends - Meiji / Taisho Period
Description
An exceptionally refined Japanese Cha-tana (traditional tea ceremony display shelf) dating from the late Meiji to the Taisho period. This sophisticated piece showcases the zenith of Japanese cabinetry through its minimalist, open-frame structure and the use of premium, dense hardwood—highly reminiscent of dark Shitan (Rosewood) or choice Ebony/Kuro-kaki tones—featuring a subtle, exquisite natural grain with a deep, muted luster.
The design is heavily inspired by classical Ming-style scholar architecture, adapted beautifully for the Japanese tea aesthetic. The top ends are adorned with elegant, raised "rolled-scroll" edges known as Fude-gaeshi (brush-stops), designed to prevent calligraphy brushes or scrolls from rolling off. The structural design harmonizes slender rounded pillars with offset enclosed cabinets and asymmetrical open platforms, creating a striking interplay of positive and negative space.
Perfectly scaled for contemporary high-end interiors, this open sideboard serves as a majestic stage for displaying luxury ceramics, netsuke, or small sculptures.
Material:
Premium dense hardwood (Shitan/Rosewood or high-grade stained Mulberry/Zelkova), featuring high-quality traditional joinery without prominent iron nails.
Technique:
Traditional Japanese Sashimono (finely jointed cabinetry), wiped natural protective finish.
Condition:
Very good antique condition. Features beautiful structural integrity. Close-up photographs show minor, age-appropriate separation at the fine joinery seams and slight natural drying cracks at the curved tips (Fude-gaeshi parts), along with light dust retention in the recessed edges—all perfectly normal for genuine period woodwork and testifying to its antique authenticity.
