Vintage Japanese Kamakura-bori Lacquered Wooden Kyodai (Tabletop Vanity Mirror & Jewelry Chest) - Hand-Carved Peony Motif - Showa Period
Description
A exquisitely crafted Japanese Kyodai (传统桌面梳妆镜并内置梳妆箱), dating from the mid-to-late Showa period. This captivating piece showcases the renowned Kamakura-bori style of lacquerware, where detailed relief carving is combined with layered lacquer applications.
The entire wooden structure is meticulously hand-chiseled with a textured honeycomb backdrop (Ishime-gata). Spanning across the fronts of the drawers is a bold, high-relief carving of a blooming Peony (Botan), a traditional symbol of prosperity and nobility in Japan. The finish features a dramatic contrast technique: a deep kuro-urushi (black lacquer) base is overlaid and selectively polished back to reveal vivid shu-urushi (vermilion red lacquer) underneath, accentuating every artistic knife stroke.
The chest offers three functional drawers decorated with ornate, circular metallic pull knobs, providing excellent storage for jewelry, cosmetics, or trinkets. The tall rectangular mirror is attached securely to the back, making this a highly functional vanity station and a dramatic decorative accent for any contemporary bedroom or living space.
Material:
Indigenous wood, Japanese lacquer (Urushi), glass mirror, and alloy metal hardware.
Technique:
Kamakura-bori style hand-carving, multi-layered colored lacquer artistry.
Condition:
Good vintage condition. The mirror glass is clear and intact. The lacquer finish retains its gorgeous luster and deep colors. True to its age, there are minor surface scuffs, faint scratch marks, and light edge wear where the lacquer has slightly rubbed down at the sharp corners (accurately documented in the close-up photographs), adding to its authentic vintage character. Drawers slide smoothly.
Mirror Only:
91.5 cm (Height) x 39.5 cm (Width) x 2.0 cm (Depth)
