Artist Biography: Matazo Kayama

Matazo Kayama was one of the leading Japanese-style painters of the late 20th century.

While based on traditional Nihonga techniques, he developed a highly refined style that combined decorative composition, elegant line work, and a modern artistic sensibility.
His subjects include animals, female figures, snowy landscapes, the moon, Mt. Fuji, and women in kimono.

Kayama is known for reinterpreting the aesthetics of classical Japanese painting, including Rimpa and Yamato-e, in a modern form.
He was designated a Person of Cultural Merit in 1997 and received the Order of Culture in 2003, making him one of the most important figures in modern Japanese art.

This work, “Tsuna,” reflects Kayama’s refined elegance and graceful depiction of the female figure.
The soft colors, beautiful use of empty space, and delicate net-like kimono pattern give the print a quiet, sophisticated presence.
