Item Description
This is a striking ceramic vase by 木村芳郎 Kimura Yoshiro (b. 1946), a Japanese studio potter based in Hiroshima renowned for his distinctive cobalt and turquoise hekiyu glaze work.

The vase has an organically sculpted, faceted body that tapers from a wide asymmetrical rim down to a narrower base, creating a fluid, wave-like silhouette. The glaze transitions gradually from pale turquoise at the shoulder to a deep cobalt blue toward the foot, with a fine, dense crackle pattern running throughout the surface. The interior of the vessel is left in a dark glaze, contrasting with the luminous exterior.

The piece is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), which is inscribed and sealed, supporting its authenticity and provenance directly from the artist's studio.

Condition
The vase is in excellent overall condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs noted upon inspection. Fine crazing is visible throughout the glaze, which is characteristic of this type of high-fired ceramic and not a defect. Minor surface marks consistent with age and handling may be present.

Artist Profile
Kimura was born in 1946 in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, and lives and works in Hiroshima. He graduated from Okayama University of Commerce in 1970 and established his own kiln in Higashi-Hiroshima in 1975.

Deeply influenced by the philosophies of Zen Buddhism and the Way of Tea, Kimura travelled extensively, visiting more than 47 countries, and was first drawn to ceramic art through the blue pigments of ancient pottery traditions encountered along the way. Working with the traditional hekiyu (Japanese blue glaze) and renmon (a decorative rippling technique), he has produced an extensive body of work exclusively in variations of blue. His signature cobalt glaze was developed during his twenties and is achieved through multiple layers and successive firings of considerable technical difficulty. His trademark blue is often affectionately called "Kimura Blue" by admirers in Japan and abroad.

Kimura has received numerous prestigious awards both in Japan and internationally, including the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition Encouragement Prize, the Prize of Excellence of the Tanabe Museum, an award at the 1st World Ceramic Biennale, and the Kaneshige Toyo Prize, as well as the Hiroshima Cultural Prize (1994), a bronze award at an international ceramics exhibition (2000), the Asahi Shimbun Prize at the 67th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (2020), and the Agency for Cultural Affairs Regional Cultural Contribution Award (2021).

His works are held in numerous public museum collections both in Japan and abroad, including the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art Crafts Gallery, the British Museum, the Musée national de céramique-Sèvres, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Solo exhibitions have been held at Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi in Tokyo, Ginza Wako Hall, and Galerie Pierre Marie Giraud in Brussels, among other venues internationally.

The present work, a hekiyu-glazed faceted vessel, is characteristic of Kimura's signature style and comes with its original tomobako box.
