VINTAGE TELESCOPIC DIPS PEN OF INTRICATE PLATE WORK (U.S., LATE 19th CENTURY):
We present at auction an authentic jewel of metalwork applied to writing instruments: a penholder or telescoping dip pen from the late 19th or early 20th century.
This piece stands out especially for its elaborate aesthetics. The cylindrical body features superb repoussé and engraving work in a spiral, adorned with intricate floral motifs and volutes characteristic of high Victorian society. All the relief work is covered by a thick, bright gold-filled coating.
It has a lateral slider mechanism on the central ring that allows the nib to extend or retract safely for pocket transport in a waistcoat, thus preserving the tip’s integrity. Additionally, the black ebony tail at the rear telescopes out, turning this pocket piece into a full-size, perfectly balanced desktop instrument.
Equipped with a historically solid gold nib made in New York, cradle of the world’s best jewelers and nib manufacturers in that era. It is very likely to be a historical period replacement (marriage), a common practice when users visited their trusted stationery shop to replace a damaged nib with a higher-caliber calligraphy nib.
Condition (Expert Review)
Please study the photographic gallery carefully, bearing in mind that this is an instrument over a hundred years old:
Gold and Ebony Body: The metalwork is exceptional. The gold coating shows a spectacular patina, preserving the floral relief and spiral in magnificent condition. The black ebony is intact and free of cracks.
Customization: The central sliding ring bears the original owner’s initials beautifully incised, a historical testament to its past.
Mechanism: The lateral slider and telescopic extraction operate smoothly and correctly.
Nib: The gold nib (New York) is in good condition. Note: This is a dip instrument with no internal ink reservoir. It is delivered as is, without original case.
Shipping
The item will be carefully protected and securely packaged, with insured shipping and an international tracking number.
A wonderful opportunity for antique collectors and calligraphers to add a mechanical and artistic jewel of the 19th century to their collection! Best of luck to all bidders!
