Elegant Louis XV Style Bombe Chest of Drawers – Walnut & Burr Walnut Veneer – Mid-19th Century (ca. 1850)
Description
A beautifully proportioned Louis XV style bombe chest of drawers, dating to approximately 1850, crafted with exceptional attention to detail and finished with striking walnut and burr walnut veneers.
The elegant serpentine front, graceful bombe sides and finely shaped cabriole feet give this chest a refined appearance characteristic of high-quality mid-19th-century cabinetmaking.
The drawer fronts and top are veneered with carefully selected burr walnut, displaying a lively natural grain with attractive figuring and warm colour variations. The surrounding darker walnut framing enhances the visual depth and elegance of the design.
The chest features three smoothly curved drawers, each retaining its original key escutcheon. The interior of the drawers is lined with decorative patterned paper, adding charm and character.
The cabinet has recently undergone a careful, conservative cleaning and revitalisation. Old layers of wax and accumulated dirt have been removed, allowing the original beauty of the walnut veneers to reappear. The surface has been nourished and finished with traditional furniture care products, preserving its authentic patina rather than creating an over-restored appearance.
As expected for a piece of approximately 175 years old, there are signs of age and use, including:
small age-related veneer shrinkage and fine hairline cracks,
minor scratches and wear consistent with normal use,
beautiful natural patina throughout.
These are not considered defects but are evidence of the cabinet's authenticity and history.
The construction, original backboards and traditional craftsmanship further support the mid-19th-century dating.
An elegant and decorative antique chest that is equally suitable for a classic or contemporary interior.
Approximate date: circa 1850
Style: Louis XV / Rococo Revival
Materials: Solid wood, walnut veneer, burr walnut veneer
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear and an attractive original patina.
This is a highly decorative and collectible antique piece with timeless elegance.
