Item Description
This tsutsu-gata (cylindrical) hanaire flower vase is the work of ceramic artist Okada Kenzo, who operates his own kiln in the Mashiko pottery region of Tochigi Prefecture. The piece features a bold, hand-painted swirl (uzumaki-mon) motif in soft cream/beige tones against a deep, mottled dark-green and charcoal ground, giving the vase a striking graphic quality reminiscent of shell or wave forms. The tall, straight-walled cylindrical form is a classic shape for use as a hanaire (flower container) in the tea ceremony, and the piece comes complete with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed with the title, the artist's signature, and his red seal. A pottery stamp is also impressed on the underside of the vase. A fine decorative and functional piece for collectors of Japanese studio ceramics and tea utensils.

Artist Profile
Okada Kenzo (born 1948 in Tokyo) is a Japanese ceramic artist based in Kamiohba, Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, where he established his own kiln and became an independent potter in 1973. Over his career he has been selected for numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition (Dento Kogei Shinsaku Ten), the Chunichi International Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Dento Kogei Ten), the Kita-Kanto New Works Exhibition, and the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition (Nihon Togei Ten), where he also received an Encouragement Prize. He has held solo exhibitions, including one at Marusho Gallery.
