A remarkable and authentic canoe prow ornament from the Gelvink Bay (Cenderawasih Bay) region of West Papua, Indonesia. This finely carved wooden piece once adorned the bow of a traditional perahu and is executed in the distinctive Korwar artistic tradition, one of the most recognizable carving styles of the Bird’s Head and Cenderawasih Bay regions.
The carving features a beautifully rendered Korwar ancestor head, symbolizing the protective presence of ancestral spirits watching over the crew during their journeys. Integrated into the design is an Ular Naga, the mythical sea serpent or dragon, a powerful supernatural being associated with the sea, protection, strength, and the unknown waters. The combination of these two important motifs reflects the deep spiritual beliefs of the coastal communities, where every voyage depended not only on skill but also on ancestral guidance and supernatural protection.
This ornament displays an attractive, naturally aged patina developed through decades of use and age. It has only minor damage consistent with its history, without detracting from its overall appearance or authenticity. The piece is estimated to be approximately 70–80 years old.
Provenance: Collected in West Papua by a Dutch schoolteacher who worked in the Gelvink Bay region during the mid-20th century. It has remained in a private collection ever since.
Pieces of this quality and with such clear Korwar iconography are increasingly difficult to find. Originally created for a working canoe rather than the tourist market, it represents an important example of the maritime art and spiritual traditions of West Papua.
