aged Korwar Ancestor Figure – Yapen (Yaman) Island, Cenderawasih Bay, West New Guinea (West Papua), Indonesia
This authentic Korwar ancestor figure originates from Yapen (also spelled Japen or historically Yaman) Island in Cenderawasih Bay, West Papua. Carved from a single piece of hardwood, this sculpture represents an ancestral spirit and reflects one of the most distinctive artistic traditions of the Geelvink Bay region.
Korwar figures were created to embody the spiritual presence of deceased ancestors. They played an important role in traditional belief systems, serving as intermediaries between the living and the ancestral world. Families consulted these figures for protection, guidance, fertility, successful fishing, good harvests, and general well-being. Such figures were often carefully preserved and passed down through successive generations.
This example displays the classic Korwar posture, with the figure seated in a compact position and the hands resting upon the knees. The expressive face, prominent head, and deeply carved features are characteristic of the Yapen style. Years of ritual handling have produced a fine, naturally worn surface with an attractive dark patina that cannot be artificially reproduced.
The figure has clearly served its traditional purpose for at least one or two generations before being collected. It shows honest signs of age and use, enhancing both its authenticity and historical significance. It is carved from hardwood and remains in very good condition considering its age, with only the expected minor wear consistent with prolonged ritual use.
An excellent and genuine collector’s piece, representing the rich spiritual traditions of the peoples of Cenderawasih Bay. Suitable for advanced collections of Oceanic tribal art, ethnographic museums, or anyone seeking an authentic Korwar figure with true cultural history and proven age.
