卖家的描述
Significant hunting-themed writing desk set with a roe deer buck, Brienz (Canton of Bern), Switzerland, ca. 1890–1910
Finely carved and fully preserved writing set made of linden wood on a naturalistic tree-trunk base. Centrally a fully sculpted roe deer buck in a characteristic marching pose over rocky terrain and lying branches. On the side, an integrated inkwell with original glass insert and an elongated nib/pen rest. Richly decorated with carved oak leaves and rustic bark texture.
The high-quality execution is directly connected with the famous Brienz woodcarving school in the Bernese Oberland, whose naturalistic animal depictions have been collected worldwide since the late 19th century. Comparable writing instruments and inkwells with deer and stag depictions were crafted in Brienz by specialized workshops and distributed through international art and souvenir trade. Historically documented are corresponding animal depictions on Brienz inkwells from the late 19th century.
The exceptionally finely modeled anatomy of the roe buck, the detailed fur texture, and the elaborately carved landscape base speak for work by a qualified Brienz workshop and not for a simple tourist piece. The design follows the typical form vocabulary of the so-called “Brienz School,” whose carvings are still regarded as a pinnacle of Swiss wood sculpture.
