Description
A striking miniature Dogon mask in copper alloy, inspired by the Gomintogo mask type.
The Gomintogo belongs to the rich corpus of Dogon zoomorphic masks. Usually known through larger wooden examples, it is characterized by a powerful face, raised ears or horns, and a strong vertical structure. This example appears as a reduced metal interpretation of that type.
The object is especially appealing for its proportions and sculptural balance. The rounded forehead, vertical central ridge, rectangular eye openings, lateral projecting elements and tall upright ears give the mask a very strong presence despite its relatively small size.
The copper alloy surface shows an old-looking green oxidized patina, with darker areas and polished high points. This contrast between oxidation and smooth worn surfaces gives the object a beautiful material depth and a strong tactile quality.
The form is compact but expressive, with a fine balance between abstraction, animal evocation and architectural construction. Its unusual material also gives it a particular interest within the broader Dogon sculptural tradition.
