Description
A finely made Kuba lidded basketry box from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Kuba are renowned for their refined work in raffia and vegetal fibres, especially in textiles, mats, prestige objects and containers. Their visual language is often based on rhythm, geometry, repetition and subtle asymmetry, qualities clearly present in this object.
This example is especially appealing for the precision of its construction and the balance of its form. The box combines a circular body with a raised square-shaped lid and lower section, creating an elegant dialogue between round and angular volumes.
The side is decorated with dark woven geometric motifs, alternating with lighter vertical panels. The top of the lid is also structured by woven lines that divide the surface into four sections. These details give the object a strong graphic presence while remaining fully integrated into the basketry technique.
Although not very old, this box is perfectly shaped and shows the high level of control characteristic of Kuba fibre work. Its appeal lies in the clarity of the form, the quality of the weaving, and the quiet sophistication of its geometric decoration.
A very attractive Kuba basketry box, appreciated for its refined construction, balanced proportions and elegant woven ornament.
Condition
Good condition overall, with minor wear and small surface irregularities consistent with age and handling.
A few broken fibres on the recessed part of the lid.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The box and its lid only.
