Details
Origin: Ethiopia
Type: Porridge spoon
Material: Horn
Dimensions: 26 cm long
Period: probably mid-20th century
Provenance: Collected locally by the present owner
Description
A fine Ethiopian porridge spoon made from horn, distinguished by its elegant curved form, refined decoration and beautiful usage patina.
This type of spoon belongs to the world of everyday domestic objects, used for preparing or serving food. Here, the choice of horn gives the object a particular refinement: the material is light, smooth and naturally warm in tone, with subtle variations developed through age and handling.
The spoon has a long, gently arched profile, with a shallow bowl and a narrow handle. The form is both functional and graceful, with a clear sense of movement from the rounded bowl to the finely finished terminal.
The handle is decorated with incised geometric motifs, including crossed lines, triangular elements and spiral bands. This refined ornament gives rhythm to the surface and elevates the object beyond simple utility.
The horn shows a deep reddish-brown patina, polished by long use. The bowl, handle and edges preserve small marks and softened areas consistent with age and handling, giving the piece a strong tactile quality.
A very attractive Ethiopian horn spoon, appreciated for its elegant elongated form, refined engraved decoration, warm old patina and strong vernacular character.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, abrasions, small marks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
Beautiful old usage patina.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The spoon only.
The photographic support is not included.
