Description
A fine Bamileke smoking pipe from Cameroon, composed of a terracotta bowl and a wooden stem.

Among the Bamileke and neighbouring Grassfields peoples, pipes could be highly elaborate personal objects, combining function, prestige and sculptural refinement. This example is especially appealing for the quality of its decorated terracotta bowl.

The bowl has a tall, compact form and is richly ornamented with geometric patterns. The surface is divided into several decorative registers, including vertical grooves, cross-hatched panels, incised bands, dotted motifs and raised linear elements. The density and variety of the decoration give the piece a strong visual rhythm.
碗碟呈高而紧凑的形态，饰以丰富的几何纹样。表面分为若干装饰区，包括竖向沟纹、交错网格板、刻线带、点状纹样和凸起的线性元素。纹饰的密度与多样性赋予作品强烈的视觉节奏感。

The wooden stem is long and slender, with a warm reddish-brown patina developed through handling and use. Its simple form contrasts beautifully with the richly textured terracotta bowl.

The surface of the bowl shows a deep dark patina, with lighter rubbed areas on the high points of the decoration. The whole object has a strong ethnographic presence and remains in a very good state of preservation.

Very good condition overall, with wear, rubbing, small marks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
