A fine Turkana snuff container from Kenya, made from a section of pelican bone with leather and fibre elements.
Objects of this type belong to the personal equipment of the Turkana and were used to carry tobacco or snuff. Small, portable and intimate, they were handled frequently and often preserved over long periods.
This example is especially appealing for the simplicity and clarity of its construction. The central section is made from pale pelican bone, forming a compact cylindrical container. Both ends are fitted with dark leather-covered elements, creating a strong contrast of colour and texture.
