An elegant bud vase by Sakaida Kakiemon XIV (1934–2013), the fourteenth-generation master of the Kakiemon family and designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property: Iroe Porcelain) in 2001.

The vase is decorated in the refined Kakiemon overglaze enamel style with a pair of millet birds among graceful grasses. The pure white porcelain body and restrained use of color highlight the elegance for which Kakiemon ware is internationally renowned.

The vase comes complete with its original signed wooden box (tomobako) and original printed leaflets.

The decoration depicts a pair of millet birds resting among delicate grasses, painted in finely controlled red, green, and black overglaze enamels on a beautifully milky-white porcelain body. The underside bears the traditional underglaze blue Kakiemon mark.

About the Artist

Sakaida Kakiemon XIV (1934–2013) succeeded as the fourteenth-generation head of the Kakiemon family in 1982.

In 2001 he was designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property: Iroe Porcelain). Throughout his career he received numerous honors, including the Japan Kōgei Association Encouragement Prize, the Minister of Education Award, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, and Honorary Citizenship of Arita. His works were exhibited both in Japan and internationally, contributing greatly to the preservation and development of the Kakiemon tradition.

Background of the Product

Kakiemon ware originated in Arita during the 17th century and is celebrated worldwide for its exceptionally pure white porcelain and elegant asymmetrical overglaze enamel decoration.

The characteristic milky-white porcelain body combined with delicate enamel painting has made Kakiemon porcelain highly regarded by collectors and museums around the world.
