Vintage Seiko Sportsmatic Automatic – Cal. 6601, 17 Jewels – July 1965 JDM Classic with Elegant Gold-Plated Case
Original Seiko Sportsmatic automatic wristwatch, manufactured in July 1965 (serial number 5706626), representing the golden era of Japanese watchmaking in the 1960s. This is an authentic Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) piece, powered by the reliable Seiko caliber 6601 with 17 jewels and Diashock protection.
Dial: A beautiful silver sunburst dial in excellent condition for its age. The elegant applied gold indices and dauphine-style hands catch the light beautifully. The dial features the early Seiko logo with the iconic arrow emblem, along with "WATER 30 PROOF" and "DIASHOCK 17 JEWELS" markings, hallmarks of the mid-1960s production. Fine minute track printed along the outer edge.
Case and Caseback: Gold-plated (EGP) case measuring approximately 33.2 mm in diameter (excluding crown), a classic and versatile size for both men and women today. The case retains its sharp faceted lugs, a signature design of the era. The stainless steel screw-down caseback displays the famous Seiko dolphin logo, "SEIKO WATER PROOF" engraving, reference number 6601-8930 EGP, and the original serial number confirming July 1965 production.
Strap: Fitted with a new camel brown crocodile-embossed leather strap (18 mm lug width) with a gold-tone buckle, perfectly complementing the warm gold tones of the case. Please note the strap is a replacement and not the original Seiko strap.
Movement: Seiko automatic caliber 6601 with 17 jewels and Diashock shock protection. The movement winds automatically with the motion of your wrist. Currently running and keeping time at the time of listing. As this is a vintage automatic movement over 55 years old, minor time deviation should be expected and accepted as part of its vintage character.
Unique Piece: The Sportsmatic line was one of Seiko's most important collections of the 1960s, bridging the gap between dress watches and everyday sports watches. This example, with its original sunburst dial, dolphin caseback, and warm gold-plated case, is a wonderful entry into vintage Seiko collecting and a genuine piece of Japanese horological history. Watches from this period in such honest, original condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. The dial remains clean and attractive with only minimal signs of aging. The gold-plated case shows light surface wear consistent with age and careful use, adding to its authentic vintage charm. The acrylic crystal is clear with no significant scratches. Maintenance: Recently carefully cleaned. Running and keeping time at the time of listing.
