A large walrus tusk okimono depicting Jurojin standing with his hands concealed within the sleeves of his voluminous robes, a hossu fly whisk resting behind his back.
The figure is rendered with a long flowing beard and a serene expression, conveying the wisdom and calm traditionally associated with the deity. The garments are finely engraved with geometric and vegetal patterns.
Signed under the base Gyokuzan.
Jurojin (寿老人) is one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese mythology and is associated with longevity, wisdom, and prosperity.
Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display. Okimono, popular in the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), were finely crafted sculptures made from materials such as ivory, boxwood, wood, and bronze.
