Item Description
This striking ceramic vessel is the work of contemporary Japanese potter Hiramatsu Ryoma (平松龍馬, b. 1986), shaped in the double-gourd tokkuri form traditionally associated with sake bottles, though here conceived as a sculptural flower vase (花插).

The surface is built up in dense, layered strata that wrap around the body of the piece, evoking sedimentary rock formations. Set against this striated texture are irregular eroded patches with a deeply pitted, cavernous surface, reminiscent of tafoni — the honeycomb-like erosion patterns found in weathered stone and coastal rock formations. This juxtaposition of fine linear striation against rough, porous eruption gives the piece a distinctly geological, almost fossil-like presence, in keeping with Hiramatsu's recurring interest in ammonites, minerals, and primordial natural forms.

The narrow neck and gently flared mouth show a warm cream-toned glaze with a small area of iron-red pooling, contrasting with the dark, smoke-toned body below. The piece is unglazed stoneware over much of its surface, left in a natural, earthy palette of cream, ochre, and near-black tones consistent with wood or gas firing techniques.

Hiramatsu studied Industrial Design at Takushoku University, graduating in 2008, before training at the Tochigi Prefectural Ceramics Technology Support Centre, where he completed the wheel-throwing course in 2010. He established studios successively in Mashiko (Tochigi), Hanamigawa Ward (Chiba City), and Sawara (Katori City, Chiba), where he continues to work. His practice draws on imagery from fossils, minerals, and mythological creatures such as dragons and oni, frequently incorporating a cracked, ammonite-inspired surface motif. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at venues including the Nihonbashi Takashimaya art gallery in Tokyo and Matsumori Bijutsu in Kyobashi, Tokyo (2023).
