Why Sōsaku Hanga Deserves Your Attention

Sōsaku Hanga — the Japanese creative-print movement — remains one of the most undervalued areas of twentieth-century art. These are not commercial reproductions produced across a divided workshop of publisher, carver, and printer: the movement's founding principle, championed above all by the artist himself, was that the same hand should design, carve, and print the work.
---------------------------------------------------------

About the Print

A young woman in an indigo kasuri kimono and a checked hanten, a towel knotted at her throat and a red comb set in her hair, turns her head sharply out of the picture. Behind her, thatched and tiled roofs sit under deep snow, a bare tree, a dark treeline, and the sign of a noodle shop. Her face is done without any of the conventional prettiness of the bijin tradition: broad, wind-reddened cheeks, a set mouth, eyes fixed on something off to the right.

Sekino was born in Aomori and grew up in the same city as Munakata Shikō. He moved to Tokyo in 1939, studied woodblock with Onchi Kōshirō and Maekawa Senpan, and became a founding member of Onchi's Ichimokukai (First Thursday Society), contributing to every one of the group's Ichimokushū portfolios. Printmaking in Japan had effectively stopped between 1940 and 1945 for want of paper and ink; the immediate postwar years saw Sekino and the Onchi circle return to small-format work, much of it looking back at the vanishing customs and northern landscapes of their own country. This sheet belongs squarely to that moment — a Tōhoku winter, recorded in 1946 by an artist who had grown up in one.
