This item was acquired from AUA Oriental Art, an antique dealer specializing in Asian art and based in Seoul, South Korea.

The bowl is potted with steeply flared sides and decorated on the interior with stylized peonies among scrolling tendrils. The exterior is carved with vertical lines below the everted mouth rim. The interior glaze shows several fine pinholes and a small but noticeable depression. A small amount of kiln grit adhesion is visible on the base. These are minor kiln flaws formed during the firing process and are commonly found in traditionally kiln-fired ceramics. Such firing traces may serve as useful references when examining the manufacturing techniques and period characteristics of the piece.

YAOZHOU CELADON

The Yaozhou kilns, active during the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 AD), were located in present-day Shaanxi Province and are renowned for their celadon wares. Yaozhou ceramics are distinguished by their olive-green or brownish-green glaze and the elegant, often spontaneous carving techniques employed in their decoration.

Yaozhou ware typically features carved or incised designs, sometimes with impressively detailed motifs. Common decorative themes include floral patterns, such as peonies and chrysanthemums, as well as abstract or geometric patterns. The carving is usually executed directly into the clay before glazing and firing, allowing the glaze to pool in the recessed areas and emphasize the design.

The forms of Yaozhou ceramics are often practical, including bowls, dishes, and jars, reflecting their use in daily life as well as on special occasions. The quality of the glaze, ranging from a matte finish to a more glossy appearance, together with the depth and precision of the carving, are important characteristics that help identify Yaozhou wares.
