Vintage Double-Sided Japanese Enamel Advertising Sign – Kiku (菊和) Shōchū / “Sake is Rikyu”

This authentic double-sided porcelain enamel sign is a wonderful example of mid-century Japanese liquor advertising, promoting Kikuwa (菊和), a brand of seijun shōchū (清純焼酎 / pure distilled shōchū). While many enamel signs from the Showa era relied on illustrations, this piece achieves its impact through bold typography and striking color contrast alone, creating an unmistakable presence that would have caught the eye outside liquor stores and neighborhood retailers.

One side proudly declares:

「清純焼酎　菊和」
“Pure Distilled Shōchū – Kikiwa”

The phrase 清純焼酎 reflects the marketing language of the period, emphasizing purity, careful distillation, and a clean, refined taste. During the Showa era, as shōchū evolved from a regional spirit into a widely enjoyed everyday drink, producers increasingly highlighted quality and craftsmanship to distinguish themselves in a competitive market.

The reverse side carries a memorable advertising slogan:

「酒は利久」
“When it comes to sake, choose Rikyū.”

Rather than repeating the product name, this side functions as a concise catchphrase designed to remain in customers' memories. It reflects the advertising style of the time, when a simple phrase paired with bold calligraphy was often more effective than lengthy explanations. The use of different messages on each side also made the sign practical for storefront display, allowing pedestrians approaching from either direction to encounter a distinct advertisement.

The visual design is unmistakably Showa. The vivid yellow and deep red backgrounds, combined with large black and white lettering, were created to maximize visibility from across the street. The rounded corners and glossy porcelain enamel finish embody the durability and craftsmanship that made these signs a familiar sight throughout postwar Japan.

Today, authentic enamel signs such as this are appreciated not only for their nostalgic charm but also as graphic design objects that capture the optimism of Japan's rapid economic growth.
