Important Luba Ceremonial Staff (Kibango)

Luba, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Kalundwe Style

Beginning 20th Century

Height: 123 cm (48.4 in)

An impressive and finely carved Luba ceremonial staff (kibango) from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, executed in the refined Kalundwe style, one of the most celebrated sculptural traditions of the Luba Kingdom.

The staff is crowned by a beautifully carved female head with serene half-closed eyes, a ringed neck and a distinctive cross-shaped coiffure on the reverse.

The elongated geometric torso is decorated with finely incised triangular motifs, displaying the elegant proportions and sophisticated design associated with the Kalundwe artistic tradition.

Ceremonial staffs of this type were insignia of authority, prestige and ancestral legitimacy, carried by Luba chiefs and members of the royal court.

Female imagery symbolizes wisdom, memory, fertility and dynastic continuity.

The sculpture bears a rich, dark patina with evident signs of age and handling, consistent with long-term traditional use. The rounded lower end exhibits authentic wear.

Provenance

Formerly in the collection of Galerie Pierre Dartevelle, Brussels.
Accompanied by the original certificate issued by Galerie Dartevelle, Brussels.

Condition Excellent overall condition with a deep, attractive patina and minor age-related wear. Presented on a custom-made metal display stand.
