Description
This extraordinary bronze signet ring, distinguished by its powerful square bezel, monumental form and pronounced symbolic arrangement, reflects the multilayered tradition of protective jewellery associated with Medieval Jerusalem and the Eastern Mediterranean. At the centre of the bezel is a closed, curvilinear motif recalling the Hebrew letter Samekh (ס), surrounded by four separate points—arba nekudot. This distinctive composition is iconographically described here as Samekh Arba Ruḥot — “The Samekh of the Four Directions.”

Samekh is connected with the Hebrew root samakh—“to support, uphold and protect.” Its enclosing form evokes integrity, continuity and divine guardianship, while the four surrounding points may be associated with the Arba Ruḥot: the four cosmic directions of north, south, east and west. Under this interpretation, the central Samekh represents the source of protective power, while the four nekudot signify the extension of that support towards every quarter of the world.

The composition may also be compared with the Kabbalistic Arbaʿah Olamot—Atzilut, Beriah, Yetzirah and Assiyah—representing the four levels of existence. The ring may therefore be interpreted not merely as decorative jewellery but as a kamea: a personal protective object expressing encompassing divine support and cosmic balance.

Its broad shoulders, substantial hoop and elevated square bezel remain remarkably well preserved. A rich archaeological patina composed of dark olive-green, brown and warm bronze tones accentuates the relief symbols and lends the object exceptional historical depth.
