Vintage Memostar Alarm – Swiss Made – A. Schild Cal. 1931 – 1970s

A very attractive and increasingly collectible vintage Swiss Memostar Alarm, dating from the early-to-mid 1970s. This distinctive timepiece perfectly captures the bold and futuristic design language of the 1970s, featuring a characteristic TV-screen/cushion-shaped case, a beautifully detailed deep blue dial and the highly desirable mechanical alarm complication.

The watch is powered by the renowned A. Schild (AS) calibre 1931, a Swiss hand-wound mechanical alarm movement. The AS 1931 is historically significant among vintage alarm movements and succeeded the famous AS 1475, introducing a date display and a higher beat frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The movement is fitted with 17 jewels and Incabloc shock protection, as indicated on the dial.

The dial is particularly attractive, finished in a rich deep blue with fine vertical pinstriping, complemented by contrasting applied hour markers and the characteristic orange alarm hand. The date aperture is positioned at 3 o'clock. The combination of the blue dial, orange alarm indicator and angular case gives this Memostar an unmistakable 1970s character.
The two original crowns control the two functions of the watch: the conventional timekeeping mechanism and the separate mechanical alarm mechanism. The alarm is indicated by the distinctive orange hand and produces the characteristic buzzing/vibrating sound associated with the AS 1931 alarm system.

The case has a particularly appealing retro-futuristic shape, with contrasting brushed and polished surfaces. The screw-down case back is marked with the period's water-resistance wording and stainless-steel information. As with any vintage watch, however, water resistance should not be assumed without modern pressure testing.

The watch presents very well for its age. The dial is especially attractive and retains its strong original vintage character. The case shows only minor signs of age and use, consistent with a watch from the 1970s.
