Item Description
井堂雅夫 Ido Masao(1945-2016)
A masterful woodblock print titled "祇園" (Gion) by celebrated Kyoto artist Ido Masao, capturing a weeping cherry tree in full bloom cascading before a traditional wooden machiya townhouse in Kyoto's historic Gion district. Delicate white blossoms and drifting petals are rendered with extraordinary subtlety against warm wood tones, soft grey roof tiles, and a cobblestone street, evoking the fleeting beauty of hanami season in one of Japan's most storied neighborhoods.
Ido Masao was one of the foremost figures in contemporary Japanese woodblock printmaking, renowned worldwide for his distinctive palette often referred to as "IDO GREEN." Working in the traditional multi-block, hand-carved and hand-printed method alongside skilled carvers and printers, he devoted his career to capturing the seasonal beauty of Kyoto's temples, gardens, and townscapes with remarkable atmospheric depth and delicate use of light and shadow. This print bears the artist's pencil title "祇園," his pencil signature, and his red seal in the lower margin.
Presented in its original wooden frame, this piece is ready to hang and would make a distinguished addition to any collection of contemporary Japanese woodblock prints.

Artist Profile
Ido Masao (井堂雅夫, 1945–2016) was born in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, and moved to Kyoto in 1960. In 1961 he apprenticed under traditional dyeing craftsman Yoshida Kōhō, before turning to woodblock printmaking in 1972. He was selected for the Japan Print Association exhibition and the Nichido Print Grand Prix in 1973, and was recognized as a member of the Sangunkai New Artist Award the same year. His work became internationally celebrated for its distinctive "IDO GREEN" color sensibility and masterful rendering of light, mist, and seasonal atmosphere across Kyoto's landscapes. He held solo exhibitions in Chicago (1990) and was a specially invited artist at the Graz Art Association exhibition in Austria the same year. His prints are held in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (since 2004) and the U.S. Library of Congress (since 2006). He created the official four-image design for Japan Post's Kinki-region commemorative "Kyoto Festivals" stamps in 2003, and held a major 40th career anniversary retrospective at the Kyoto Museum of Culture in 2013. Ido Masao passed away on April 23, 2016.
