【Artist Profile】

Teraike Shizuto (b. 1933, Kyoto) was born into a family of potters, the son of ceramic artist Teraike Toshu. He studied under Yaichi Kusube, the founder of the celebrated *saiten* glazing technique. In 1974 he was awarded the Grand Honour Prize at the Vallauris International Ceramics Biennale in France, and in 1994 received the Minister of Education Award at the Japan New Crafts Exhibition. His work is characterised by natural and auspicious motifs that fuse modern sensibility with masterful glaze and wheel-thrown form.
