This hand-blown glass vase is by Fujita Kyohei (1921–2004), the leading Showa-era glass artist and the first glass craftsman to receive Japan's Order of Culture. The vase displays shades of light blue combined with white, bubble-like and net-like patterns beneath the surface, created through multiple layers of colored glass that give the piece a solid, substantial weight. When lit gently from an angle behind, rather than directly from the front, the internal bubbles and net-like patterns become visible through the glass, revealing the depth and translucency unique to hand-blown glass work.

Artist Profile
Fujita Kyohei (1921–2004) was a glass artist born in Tokyo. After studying metal engraving at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), he turned to glass and developed his own distinctive artistic style. He also worked in Murano, Venice, and earned wide acclaim in Japan and abroad for his 飾筥 kazaribako (decorative box) series, which combined layered colored glass with gold leaf. His achievements were exceptional: he was elected to the 日本芸術院会員 Japan Art Academy in 1989, honored as a Person of 文化勲章 Cultural Merit in 1997, and in 2002 became the first glass artist ever to receive the Order of Culture, the highest honor attainable by a glass artist in Japan. This work reflects the refined technique and aesthetic sensibility for which he is celebrated.
