This elegant single-flower vase (ikebana hanaire) is a fine example of Takaoka Dōki, the celebrated bronze-casting craft of Takaoka City in Toyama Prefecture, a tradition dating back over four hundred years and long designated a Japanese Traditional Craft. The vase takes the classic 'crane-neck' (tsurukubi) form, with an especially long, slender, and gracefully tapering neck rising from a rounded body — a silhouette prized in Japanese metalwork for its refined, bird-like elegance.

The surface displays a striking marbled patina in tones ranging from deep red to charcoal grey, over which delicate gold accents have been applied. Depending on the angle and quality of light, the surface shifts beguilingly between fiery red and warm gold, giving the piece a living, luminous quality that rewards close and repeated viewing. This variegated patination is achieved through traditional Takaoka techniques of controlled oxidation and surface finishing, a hallmark of the region's bronze artisans.

While the vase carries no signature or workshop mark, an inscription engraved on the underside — reading 敬寿国鉄OB会 (Keiju Kokutetsu OB-kai) — indicates it was likely produced as a commemorative or presentation piece for a retired employees' association of the former Japanese National Railways (Kokutetsu), adding an intriguing layer of social history to the object.

Versatile in use, the vase may be enjoyed as intended for a single ikebana stem, or displayed purely as a sculptural interior accent, where its sculptural neck and shifting colour play will command attention from any angle.

The vase is in generally good, sound condition with no major damage or losses. There are small scratches near the rim (mouth) of the vase, and as this is a long-stored item, there may be minor surface marks not fully visible in photographs.
