DESCRIPTION:
This fossilized egg, Dendroolithus sp., is from a Hadrosaurid dinosaur. Hadrosaurids (meaning "bulky lizards") were a family of duck-billed, herbivorous dinosaurs that laid their eggs in nests with a dozen or more eggs. While hatching and scavenging would normally destroy most eggs, occasional eggs were fossilized as seen here. Dinosaur eggs such as this with essentially complete, almost intact shell are highly desirable.
This exceptional egg has been cleaned with air micro-abrasion to fully reveal the grey colored shell that is nearly 100% complete.
Dendroolithus sp. is an oogenus (a classification name used for fossilized eggs when the exact parent species is unknown) of dinosaur eggs. These Late Cretaceous fossils measure up to 162 mm long and 130 mm wide, and scientists believe they were laid by ornithopods like hadrosaurs, sauropods, or therizinosaurs.
