A highly distinctive Japanese Takaoka bronze vase by Zuiho (瑞峰), combining a richly patinated blue-green surface with boldly applied areas of gold leaf.

The surface treatment is one of the most compelling features of this work. Deep verdigris tones create an aged, almost archaeological appearance, while irregular areas of luminous gold emerge dramatically from the surface.

The gold leaf is deliberately applied in an organic and irregular manner rather than as a uniform decoration. Its placement, shape, and interaction with the surrounding patina give the vase an individual character, ensuring that no two pieces finished in this manner have exactly the same appearance.

This contrast between precious gold and an intentionally aged-looking bronze surface reflects a distinctly Japanese appreciation for wabi-sabi — beauty found in irregularity, natural variation, imperfection, and the changing character of materials over time.

The vase is also particularly notable for its unusual and highly decorative form. A generously rounded body rises into a narrow neck and dramatically flared mouth, creating a strong sculptural silhouette. At the base, an integrated pierced openwork foot adds further architectural and decorative interest.

The powerful blue-green patina, flashes of gold, and unconventional form give the piece a more monumental presence than a conventional flower vase, while the subtle variations across its surface reward closer viewing.

The original wooden box is inscribed “Vase” (花瓶) and bears the artist’s name Zuiho (瑞峰). A faint artist’s mark is also visible on the vase itself.
