Italian alabaster centerpiece with lid – Mid-Century – 60s/70s
Elegant and important decorative centerpiece with lid, entirely made of alabaster, Italian manufacture roughly dated to the 1960s/1970s, characterized by generous dimensions, notable weight, and an stone with extraordinary aesthetic impact.
The shape is particularly harmonious: the body, wide and strongly barrel-shaped, rests on a circular slightly raised base and is completed by a lid shaped with a central handle, also carved and worked in alabaster.
The true protagonist of the work is however the extraordinary natural conformation of the stone. Warm tones of ivory, cream, honey and beige are crossed by gray-brown areas and spectacular natural inclusions edged by darker lines. In many spots these formations assume surprising organic motifs almost floral, resembling petals and blossoms naturally drawn in the material.
A particularly scenographic effect that changes when the centerpiece is viewed from different angles and makes this piece absolutely unique, as the veins, transparencies and inclusions are irreproducible natural characteristics of the stone.
Very beautiful also the interior, where the rich structure of the alabaster continues, with veins and formations visible even in the deepest part of the vessel.
The polished and lacquered surface further enhances the material’s characteristics and, when struck by light, highlights the different depths and the slight translucencies typical of alabaster.
The considerable weight of about 3,530 kg immediately conveys the sense of an important, solid and strongly tangible object.
For stylistic characteristics, shape and workmanship, the centerpiece can be traced to Italian decorative production of the second half of the 20th century, roughly the 1960s/1970s, a period when alabaster found wide use in creating interior furnishings for more refined interiors.
In the absence of marks or labels, it is correctly offered as Italian manufacture, without attribution to a specific workshop.
Dimensions
Maximum diameter: 22 cm
Overall height with lid: 13 cm
Opening diameter: 11 cm
Weight: about 3,530 g
Interior design tips
An object with very strong decorative presence, ideal as a sculptural centerpiece, but also usable as a refined ornamental container.
An interior designer could place it perfectly on a large dining table, a sideboard, a cabinet, a low table or inside a substantial bookcase. A particularly successful pairing would be with dark woods, travertine, marble, brass and fabrics in natural tones.
Its aesthetics also allow it to fit both a Mid-Century setting and a contemporary, minimalist or eclectic interior: the essential form dialogues with modern design, while the stone’s irreplicable richness gives it the character of a true sculpture to be collected.
The centerpiece is presented in excellent vintage condition, with any minimal signs compatible with the era, material and workmanship. Veins, inclusions, small voids and chromatic variations visible are natural features of alabaster and contribute to the piece’s uniqueness.
The photographs are part of the description and show in detail the extraordinary natural conformation of the stone and its state of conservation.
Packaging and shipping
The item will be prepared with particular care, given its significant weight and the natural delicacy of alabaster.
Ankerior specializes in packing and handling of artworks and valuable objects, with specific training at Palazzo Spinelli in Florence. A professional packaging suitable to the nature, weight and characteristics of the object will be produced to ensure maximum protection during transport.
