Rare double-sided bronze medieval cross with enamel.
Early Medieval Period 1100-1400 AD.

The cross has a quadrifoliate (four-petal) shape with elegant teardrop-shaped and pointed ends to the rays. The main feature of this lot is the exceptional state of preservation of the enamel filling.

Obverse (Side I):
At the center of the cross is a rhombus, divided by a bronze cross into four segments (sectors), sealed with enamel. This motif traditionally symbolizes the four cardinal points, the four Gospels, and the harmony of the created world, sanctified by the sign of the cross.
Reverse (Side II):
In the center is a composition of concentric circles ("eye" / "solar disk"). In medieval tradition, this symbol symbolized Christ as the "Sun of Truth," the uncreated light and divine eternity.
Ray Medallions:
Each of the four rays is topped on both sides with a rounded medallion with enamel inlay, giving the cross integrity, monumentality, and volume.
Enamel condition: Exceptional. The yellow-green (pistachio) enamel paste is almost completely preserved in the recesses, revealing the noble grainy texture of time.
Metal and patina: The bronze is covered with a natural, even dark olive patina, harmoniously contrasting with the light enamel.
