With this square-format artwork, Medsan brings the DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future into the blue-and-white porcelain and kintsugi tradition. Robert Zemeckis’ time machine, with its gull-wing doors raised, is painted in cobalt like an Arita or Delft motif, beneath Hill Valley’s clock tower frozen at the fateful hour. The trails of fire, the electrical arcs of the flux capacitor, and the road lines complete the quotation, while the entire surface is traversed by a network of breaks joined with gold.
The treatment plays on two distinct ceramic registers. The decor is rendered in cobalt blue underglaze, with washes and fine brushstrokes, and hatchings model the stainless steel body, grille, and rims; the DE LOREAN lettering remains legible on the side. On this ivory, crackled background, a very fine brown lattice runs everywhere, while major fractures are outlined with thick, domed gold lacquer, in the maki-e logic applied to kintsugi. Vermilion for the flames and spiraling swirls introduces the only warm color, borrowed from Japanese woodblock print clouds and waves motifs.
The mashup makes a simple, strong statement: time breaks objects, and gold makes them more precious. A car designed to abolish chronology is inscribed in a material that, in turn, keeps the memory of every shock.
