Description
A fine anthropomorphic terracotta vessel attributed to the Igbo-Izzi group of Nigeria.

Vessels of this type are generally associated with the north-eastern Igbo region, around the Izzi area and the Benue region. They form a distinctive corpus of hand-built clay vessels in which the container itself is transformed into a stylised human head or face.

This example is especially appealing for its compact and expressive form. The rounded body rests on a short foot, while the front of the vessel is animated by a highly simplified face: projecting nose, small eyes, ears and mouth. The facial features are not naturalistic, but reduced to essential volumes, giving the object a strong archaic and sculptural presence.
