吉田美統 Yoshita Minori (1932–) was born in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture, and became the third-generation master of Kinzangama at the age of 19. Kinzangama, established in 1906, is particularly renowned for Kutani overglaze decoration and the use of gold.

Yoshita developed and refined highly sophisticated gold-decoration techniques, particularly Yūri Kinsai (釉里金彩), in which gold leaf or gold decoration is applied to the ceramic body and covered with glaze before firing. In 2001, he was officially designated by Japan as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for Yūri Kinsai.

His major achievements include the Encouragement Prize at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition in 1984, the Prince Takamatsu Memorial Prize in 1992, and recognition as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property in 2001.

吉田美統 Yoshita Minori (1932–) is the third-generation master of Kinzangama, a distinguished Kutani ware kiln in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. This elegant Kutani ware yunomi tea cup features a rich vermilion-red ground decorated with refined gold floral arabesque motifs.

The decoration is executed in the tradition of Kinrande, a luxurious style of Kutani overglaze decoration characterized by the extensive use of gold. Graceful flowers, leaves, and scrolling vines cover the surface, creating a sophisticated contrast between the warm red ground and luminous gold decoration. Fine incised details visible within the gold leaves and floral elements add depth and delicacy to the design.

Yoshita Minori is particularly celebrated for his mastery of gold decoration. In 2001, he was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for the technique of Yūri Kinsai (underglaze gold decoration), commonly referred to as a “Living National Treasure” of Japan.

The wooden tomobako bears the inscription identifying the piece as a “Kinrande Hanakarakusa-mon Yunomi” (gold brocade-style floral arabesque tea cup), together with the artist’s name and seal.

The original wooden box and accompanying paper documentation are included.

Use: Japanese tea cup (yunomi) for serving green tea; it may also be appreciated as a collectible example of Japanese ceramic art.
