Description
A simple and striking Zulu isicholo headdress from South Africa, made of tightly woven red cotton.
The isicholo is traditionally associated with married Zulu women and is one of the most recognisable forms of South African ceremonial dress. Its distinctive circular form developed from earlier married women’s hairstyles and later became a separate headdress worn on important social and ceremonial occasions.
This example is not an early historical piece, but a later textile version. It is nevertheless visually very effective: the bright red colour, low rounded profile, circular woven structure and central raised seam give it a strong graphic and sculptural presence.
A decorative and accessible ethnographic object, attractive both as a textile piece and as a display object.
Condition
Good overall condition. Minor wear, small loose threads and fraying around the opening and ties, consistent with age and handling. Black inner lining. Please refer to the photographs.
