Set of 10 Subfossil Hippopotamus Bones – Extinct Malagasy Hippopotamus – Madagascar
A remarkable set of 10 authentic subfossil bones from an extinct Malagasy hippopotamus, offering a varied and highly interesting representation of the skeleton of these remarkable animals.
Madagascar’s extinct hippopotamuses were smaller insular relatives of mainland African hippos and formed part of the island’s unique Quaternary megafauna. Fossil evidence indicates that at least one species survived until approximately 1,000 years ago.
This group includes a diverse selection of skeletal elements, making it especially interesting from both a collecting and anatomical perspective. The bones show natural variations in colour, surface texture and preservation, ranging from pale beige and grey to darker brown tones.
