Beautiful Cobra figurative composition from 1978. On the left, a large black figure, powerful and gestural, almost animal, occupies space with raw energy: thick lines, swirling movements, a hybrid form between bird and anthropomorphic being.
On the right, a group of smaller, more linear silhouettes, also zoomorphic, face it, some standing, others as if suspended.
The gray wash structures the space and adds depth, while the black ink, laid down with great freedom, creates an immediate tension between the two groups. The gesture is spontaneous, nervous and with a strong expressive charge, typical of the Cobra spirit.

Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a major Belgian artist, best known as a sculptor in marble (notably in Carrara and with Bardiglio marble).
Parallel to his sculptural practice, he developed throughout his life a substantial pictorial production, long kept confidential and today highly sought after by collectors.
Strongly influenced by the Cobra movement (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant…), Marcus de Vestele drew inspiration from it to create abstract-figurative compositions of great expressive power.
His works on paper from the 1970s are characterized by spontaneous lines, free gesturing and a constant tension between figuration and abstraction.
His drawings and wash drawings combine the rigidity of the sculptor with Cobra’s lyrical and gestural explosion. Directly from the atelier, this paper production constitutes an essential and singular facet of his work, occupying a unique place in Belgian art of the second half of the 20th century.
