Engraved Brass Footed Bowl (Tas) with Islamic Inscription – Dated 1103 AH
Description
A brass footed bowl (Tas), handcrafted and decorated with finely engraved traditional motifs. The bowl features a deep, rounded body raised on a short ring foot.
The exterior is richly ornamented with repeating elongated panels filled with stylized vegetal and arabesque motifs, framed by engraved geometric borders along the upper and lower sections. The entire decoration has been executed by hand, reflecting the craftsmanship of traditional metalwork.
Near the upper rim, there is a hand-engraved inscription. At the end of the inscription, the name “Mohammad” appears, followed by the date “Sanah 1103” (AH). The year 1103 AH corresponds approximately to 1691–1692 CE, during the late Safavid period. The beginning of the inscription is worn and no longer fully legible; therefore, no further interpretation has been made.
The interior was originally tinned, with remnants of the original tinning still visible. The bowl displays an attractive natural patina, oxidation, and wear consistent with its age and long period of use.
The bowl has undergone several old repairs during its lifetime. A historic metal patch with solder repairs is visible on the exterior, while the interior shows evidence of old repairs, patches, and age-related cracks. The rim and foot also exhibit minor deformation, dents, and wear, all clearly shown in the photographs.
This is a fine example of traditional Safavid metalwork featuring a dated inscription, making it an appealing piece for collectors of Islamic art.
