【Product details】
A set of two Japanese copper kensui, traditional waste-water bowls used during the Japanese tea ceremony, dating approximately to the early Shōwa period.
The larger kensui bears the incised signature “Jōeki” (浄益) on the underside. The name Jōeki was successively used by generations of the Nakagawa family, the distinguished metalworkers of the Senke Jisshoku, the Ten Craftsmen associated with the three Sen tea schools.
Based on the estimated early Shōwa period of the piece, the signature may correspond to the 10th-generation Nakagawa Joeki (中川浄益, 1880–1940), who was active from the Meiji period through the early Shōwa period and was renowned for producing metal tea utensils.
The two kensui have different forms and surface treatments. The smaller example has a warmer reddish-brown copper patina with decorative linear detail around the body, while the larger example has a darker aged patina and bears the Jōeki signature.
Both pieces show age-related wear, patination, scratches, marks, dents and surface oxidation consistent with their age and use. Please examine the photographs carefully for the condition.
※Important: For Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco and Portugal, orders of €150 or less cannot currently be shipped due to the new €3 customs duty/IOSS issue. There is no confirmed resumption date. Please do not bid unless you are prepared to wait. Orders over €150 are not affected.
