Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) Pure Gold Leaf Bronze Vase by Hōun

This bronze vase, crafted in the traditional Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) technique, recreates the weathered patina of ancient Chinese bronzes that have rested underground for centuries. The surface was coated in urushi (漆) lacquer and finished with genuine pure gold leaf, applied sheet by sheet by a skilled craftsman. Chemical treatment was used to draw out a striking blue-green patina (緑青, rokushō) across the surface, while the metal was further worked by hand to enhance its texture — a technique achievable only during the Shōwa era and difficult to replicate today. Flashes of pure gold leaf glow through the mottled green-purple patina, lending the piece a refined, contemporary elegance that embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. Equally at home in a traditional Japanese room or a modern interior, this vase comes with its original signed and sealed kiribako (共箱) wooden storage box — a mark of authenticity and provenance.

Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器), produced in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, was designated Japan's first National Traditional Craft in 1975 and represents over 400 years of continuous metalworking tradition dating back to the early Edo period. Renowned for its sophisticated combination of casting, chasing, and coloring techniques, Takaoka Copperware earned numerous awards at international expositions during the Meiji era and continues to be highly regarded worldwide for its craftsmanship.
