Fender Japan ST62 Stratocaster — Burgundy Mist Metallic — MIJ 1994/95 — Fujigen-era
Listing Details

Brand — Fender Japan

Type of instrument/accessories — Electric guitar (Stratocaster, '62 Vintage Reissue). Instrument only — no case and no tremolo arm included.

Where it is made (country) — Japan. Fujigen-era production.

Serial number — S036266. Stamped on the neck heel together with "MADE IN JAPAN", which dates the instrument to 1994–1995.

Colour — Burgundy Mist Metallic

Type of wood body/neck — Body: solid wood, most likely Basswood, which was the standard body material for the regular ST62 line in this period; the guitar's light weight of 3.1 kg is consistent with this. Neck: Maple, with a slab Rosewood fingerboard and aged dot inlays.

Type of tuners — Vintage-style Kluson-type, original to the instrument.

Type of pickups — Three vintage-style single coils with black fibre flatwork, cloth-covered lead wire and staggered alnico pole pieces. Original and unmodified.

Type of neck joint — Bolt-on (4-bolt).

Whether parts have been replaced — No replaced parts identified. The pickguard has been removed for inspection: the potentiometers are the original Japanese 250 kΩ type, the 5-way selector is the original YM-50, and none of the solder joints show any sign of rework. The wiring harness appears entirely factory-original.

Whether there is any damage — No cracks, no breaks, no previous repairs. There is finish chipping along the edges of the neck pocket from the neck having been removed; this is cosmetic only and is hidden when the neck is fitted. Light dulling of the metal parts consistent with age. The fingerboard is dry and would benefit from oiling. No headstock damage and no finish cracking on the body.

Whether repairs are needed — No. The instrument is fully functional and playable as it stands.

◉Shipping method – Shipped via DHL. Estimated delivery approx. 10 days after auction close. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying.

Condition & Additional Notes
Overall condition

The body is in excellent cosmetic condition for a guitar of this age. The Burgundy Mist Metallic finish is clean and glossy, with no significant dings, no buckle rash on the back and no finish cracking. This is typical of Japanese-market instruments, which tend to be kept in cases and handled carefully. The only notable cosmetic issue is the chipping around the neck pocket edges, which is not visible when the guitar is assembled.

At 3.1 kg this is a genuinely light Stratocaster, noticeably lighter than most, and very comfortable to play standing up.

Frets and fingerboard

The frets are original and have never been levelled or replaced. Approximately 70–80% remaining. There is light flattening of the crowns in the lower positions on the treble side, but no deep divots and no dead spots. The frets are level and no fret ends protrude.

The Rosewood fingerboard is dry and has faded to a greyish brown. It is structurally perfect — no cracks, no lifting, no loose inlays — and will darken again with a light oiling.

Electronics

Fully working. All three pickups are live, the 5-way selector switches cleanly through every position, and the volume and both tone controls operate smoothly with no crackle. The wiring is original throughout.

A note on the model designation

Fender Japan did not mark model numbers anywhere on their instruments — only the serial number and country of origin are stamped on the neck heel. For this reason the exact catalogue designation (ST62-53, ST62-70, ST62-110 and so on) cannot be confirmed without the original documentation, which is not present.

What can be stated with confidence is that this is an ST62 — a 1962-style Stratocaster reissue — from the 1994–1995 Fujigen era, finished in Burgundy Mist Metallic.

Burgundy Mist was not a standard catalogue colour for the regular ST62 line in this period, so this is most likely a limited or special-order run. Detailed photographs of the neck heel stamp, the neck pocket, the pickup routing, the pickups and the complete wiring harness are included, so that bidders with specific knowledge of Fender Japan production can draw their own conclusions.

The fingerboard is Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia). Following the CITES CoP18 decision, finished musical instruments containing Dalbergia species — with the sole exception of Dalbergia nigra (Brazilian Rosewood) — were removed from CITES commercial trade controls in November 2019. No CITES permit is required for this instrument, and it can be shipped internationally without restriction. No Brazilian Rosewood, ivory or other controlled material is present.
