About the print

Fugaku hyakkei is Hokusai's late masterpiece in book form — 102 views across three volumes, begun when he was seventy-five, immediately after the colour series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Stripped of colour and reduced to black line and grey wash, the hundred views are where Hokusai does his most audacious compositional thinking: Fuji is almost never the subject, only the thing glimpsed past whatever happens to be in the way.

Here the obstruction is a kakehi — a wooden flume carrying water down a hillside on trestles. Hokusai lets it discharge a single unbroken arc of water clean across the upper left of the sheet, a long pale curve drawn with three lines and nothing else, and sets Fuji in the gap it opens. The mountain is tiny, dark, and easy to miss. The whole visual weight of the design sits with the water and with the traffic beneath it: porters shouldering bundles and a peddler's cabinet along the riverbank road, a figure resting under a wide flat hat, two women on the higher path among the rocks, and two flat-bottomed boats out on the water. Behind them the land opens into a plain rendered in soft grey bands, with more travellers reduced to specks.

It is a characteristic piece of Hokusai's late wit — the sacred peak of Japan framed, and nearly upstaged, by a length of village plumbing.
